Internal consistency of survey respondents’ forecasts: Evidence based on the Survey of Professional Forecasters
نویسنده
چکیده
We ask whether the di¤erent types of forecasts made by individual survey respondents are mutually consistent, using the SPF survey data. We compare the point forecasts and central tendencies of probability distributions matched by individual respondent, and compare the forecast probabilities of declines in output with the probabilities implied by the probability distributions. When the expected associations between these di¤erent types of forecasts do not hold for some idividuals, we consider whether the discrepancies we observe are consistent with rational behaviour by agents with asymmetric loss functions. Rounding of probability forecasts : The SPF forecast probabilities of negative output growth
We consider the possibility that respondents to the Survey of Professional Forecasters round their probability forecasts of the event that real output will decline in the future. We make various assumptions about how forecasters round their forecasts, including that individuals have constant patterns of responses across forecasts. Our primary interests are the impact of rounding on assessments ...
متن کاملInflation and output growth uncertainty in individual survey expectations
This paper studies uncertainty using the ECB Survey of Professional Forecasters’ data. We consider both inflation and real GDP growth forecasts at the micro level and explore forecast uncertainty using two alternative measures, i.e. conventional standard deviation of individual point forecasts and the median values of individual forecasters’ uncertainty, which are based on subjective probabilit...

www.philadelphiafed.org THE SURVEY’S DESIGN The SPF is the oldest quarterly survey of macroeconomic forecasts in the United States, having been initiated in 1968 under the leadership of Victor Zarnowitz at the American Statistical Association and the National Bureau of Economic Research. After conducting what was then known as the ASA-NBER Quarterly Economic Outlook Survey for 22 years, the ASA...
متن کاملMeasuring the Slowly Evolving Trend in US Inflation with Professional Forecasts
Much research studies US inflation history with a trend-cycle model with unobserved components. A key feature of this model is that the trend may be viewed as the Fed’s evolving inflation target or long-horizon expected inflation. We provide a new way to measure the slowly evolving trend and the cycle (or inflation gap), based on forecasts from the Survey of Professional Forecasters. These fore...
متن کاملThe Behavior of Uncertainty and Disagreement and Their Roles in Economic Prediction: A Panel Analysis
This paper examines point and density forecasts from the European Central Bank’s Survey of Professional Forecasters. We derive individual uncertainty measures along with individual pointand density-based measures of disagreement. We also explore the relationship between uncertainty and disagreement, as well as their roles in respondents’ forecast performance and forecast revisions. We observe s...
